Sarah Palin slår idag ifrån sig kritiken i ett videomeddelande som publicerats på hennes facebook sida.
After this shocking tragedy, I listened at first puzzled, then with concern, and now with sadness, to the irresponsible statements from people attempting to apportion blame for this terrible event. (citat ur ett längre uttalande som kan ses i sin helhet nedan)
En del av uttalandet har redan fått hård kritik. Det är användandet av uttrycket ”blood libel”.
But, especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. (Sarah Palin)
Giffords som attacken i Tucson riktades mot är jude. Hank Sheinkopf är jude och demokrat och säger detta till Politico:
The blood libel is something anti-Semites have historically used in Europe as an excuse to murder Jews – the comparison is stupid. Jews and rational people will find it objectionable. This will forever link her to the events in Tucson. It deepens the hole she’s already dug for herself… It’s absolutely inappropriate.
Även konservativa kommentatorer som Jonah Goldberg har varit kritiska:
But I think that the use of this particular term in this context isn’t ideal. Historically, the term is almost invariably used to describe anti-Semitic myths about how Jews use blood – usually from children – in their rituals. I agree entirely with Glenn’s, and now Palin’s, larger point. But I’m not sure either of them intended to redefine the phrase, or that they should have.

Har folks allmänbildning och fattningsförmåga sjunkit till den milda grad att Sarah Palin framstår som höjden av bildning. Nog verkar det så.

För att förtydliga och förklara för de som eventuellt inte förstod det ovan citerade stycket.
Uttrycket ”blood libel” (blodslögn) betyder att falskeligen anklaga någon för att ha mördat eller medverkat till att mörda någon. Uttrycket härstammar som alla (nåväl, uppenbarligen inte alla) känner till från antisemitisk uppvigling under medeltiden (och även senantiken). Men att påstå att uttrycket numera endast är begränsat till att gälla attacker på judar är lika ointelligent som om en nutida svensk skulle hävda att ordet ”brasklapp” endast kan användas om biskopar och andra klerikala personer.
Du har tyvärr missat vad kritiken mot Palin gick ut på. Hon beskrev sig själv som ett offer för blood libel, något som stora judiska organisationer i USA kritiserat henne för, tex ADL (The Anti-Defamation League), J Street och The Simon Wiesenthal Center.
